SC12 Tutorial Outline
8:30 AM Preface
John Bresnahan will give a 30 minute introduction to the tutorial
9:00 AM Introduction to Clouds and Science
Kate Keahey will give a 45 minute overview of how Cloud computing is used by the scientific community.
9:45 AM Using Amazon's EC2
In this section John Bresnahan will spend 15 minutes demonstrating how to use the Amazon Web Service's management console.
10:00 AM Break
There will be a 30 minute break. In this time attendees who did not register for a FutureGrid account, or those having trouble, will have a chance to complete their FutureGrid account registration.
10:30 AM Get on the Cloud
We will spend the remaining 90 minutes of the morning session doing hands on exercises. We will use command line tools and scripting tools to start real virtual machines on a real production infrastructure cloud.
12:00 PM Lunch
There will be a 90 minute lunch break at noon. Lunch will be provided by the conference.
1:30 PM Infrastructure Cloud Offerings
In this 30 minute talk Pierre Riteau will present an overview of the current state of cloud offerings in both the commercial and scientific space.
2:00 PM Cloud Management Tools
In this 1 hour session John Bresnahan will explain the need for cloud management tools including configuration management tools like Chef, Virtual Clusters, and Autoscaling tools. If time allows there will be a demonstration of one-click clusters.
3:00 PM Break
There will be a 30 minute break.
3:30 PM Cloud Applications
In this 1 hour session various real world scientific cloud users will present their work and how they have benefited from infrastructure clouds.
4:30 PM Cloud Challenges
In this 30 minutes session Kate Keahey will present the challenges that exist in cloud computing as we move forward.
